Understanding Inflation and How to Cope
Inflation could solve two cosmological mysteries. The first was the apparent flatness of space. Inflation kept everyone working. Inflation ends when this field reaches a low enough energy density that it starts behaving like matter, i.e. So at the end of inflation essentially all of the energy of the universe is contained in this one, nearly homogeneous field.
